Realism Studies in Oil
To her delight, Pennington discovered the richness of painting in oil while taking continuing education courses in portraiture and realism while learning from old masters' techniques. This gallery features studies and commissions completed as a result of these courses.

"Blue Bliss", 30" x 30" Oil on Board Copyright © 2017 by Ginger Pennington Available for $2120. A study of a stunning sky photograph I took in Virginia. This is the fourth painting from a series of six where my focus was to celebrate the beauty of life, nature, and the supernatural. I love taking photographs of the sky and was lucky to capture this radiant sunburst in Virginia.
20" x 24", ©2014 This unique portrait painting was commissioned by a client as a gift for his wife to express his love for her alongside the love of God for all creation. From this idea we brainstormed together, I sent visual collages for approval, set up a photoshoot in Richmond, Virginia, and then began painting our vision. It was rewarding to see tears of joy on his wife's face upon the portrait's unveiling, knowing that the spirit of love, the idea of a restored relationship, and an atmosphere of joy were successfully portrayed for this couple.
"The First Snow" 9" x 14", © 2013 by Ginger Pennington. NFS. This show specific painting I created as proposed by Urban Studio + Unbound for a group show in the theme "Room With A View". Our creation was to depict various interpretations of what makes one's living space a home. After the opening of the show, all works were donated to a local hostel so their visitors can enjoy a piece of home away from home in their room.
"Jackee", 14"x16", ©2011 by Ginger Pennington. Portrait commission for a mother who wanted me to paint her daughter who died over 20 years ago in a car accident at age three. The mother's wish is for everyone to know that her daughter is in Heaven and despite it all, she still loves Jesus! The mother and I envisioned sweet Jackee in the clouds with angels, but since I do not specifically know what angels look like, I chose to keep Jackee in a type of floating cloud-like atmosphere.
"Ginger With a Pearl Earring (Study of Johannes Vermeer)", 15' x 17", © 2011 by Ginger Pennington This assignment during a Continuing Ed portraiture course included picking an old master's painting, studying their techniques and processes, and then placing our own face in the composition to create a self portrait. The professor styled a photoshoot to help get the proper angles and lighting for the photo of ourselves.
"Heather (In Style of Matisse)", 18" x 24", © 2011 by Ginger Pennington, NFS.
"Mommie and Me", 18' x 24", © 2011 by Ginger Pennington, NFS. In this painting I worked from a photograph to master the grid technique and achieve photorealism. I chose my mother's favorite photo of us together before one of her art shows, and then gave it to her as a surprise for Mother's Day.
